Been thinking about the reasoning behind the $900 bonuses that the government's been sending out to people.

From what I can tell (work with me - I live in a cave, remember?), the government's trying to get us to stimulate the economy and lessen the blow of the economic recession by buying things*.

But hang on - isn't this issue here because we're running out of resources** anyway?

There's a certain Dr. Tiki quote I can think of now that fits quite well with this hum-dinger. Anyone care to take a stab as to what it is?

Screw that. I was gonna buy things with some money I was saving (hell, I didn't know about this tax-dealie until recently), but I'm not going to now.

*Yes, the last horse has crossed the finish line.
**On an economic and global scale, in case you were asking.

Comments:
'If you do something that causes a problem, then it's a CERTIANTY that doing MORE of that, will fix the problem.'

I love you, Dr. Tiki.

Don't worry about the rock though, I didn't even KNOW about the free money until the other day and didn't know anything in detail about it until this post.

I think it's more that thanks to everyone not just being in a recession, but acting like they're in a recession (hoarding money, not purchasing), businesses are losing money. So, by taking taxxpayer money that should be spent on infrastructure and giving it out, it raises Rudd's popularity, and causes Aussies to splurge purchase (because the best kind of money is free money).
